Federal Government Launches Nationwide Livestock Empowerment Program Targeting Nigerian Youth
In a strategic move to revitalize Nigeria’s livestock sector and address the persistent challenges of farmer-herder conflicts, the Federal Government has unveiled a comprehensive nationwide livestock empowerment program. This initiative, announced in 2024, aims to equip 1,000 youths in each state with the skills and resources needed to thrive in the modern livestock industry, while also leveraging technology to drive innovation and sustainability.
President Bola Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to transforming the farmer-herder crisis into an economic opportunity by investing in the livestock sector. The program includes plans to convert the Obudu Cattle Ranch into a premier livestock hub, with a focus on boosting dairy production across the country.
The empowerment program will utilize cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), to overcome existing challenges in livestock production. Alhaji Idi Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, highlighted the importance of leveraging digital platforms to accelerate growth within the sector during the closing of the Hack4Livestock Hackathon in Abuja. He emphasized that the Nigerian Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy is designed to empower youth across the country, promoting both women’s empowerment and diversity within the livestock value chain.
