Organised by Nigeria Health Watch in collaboration with MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices (MSI Nigeria) and Family Planning News Network (FPNN), this hands-on experience is designed for early to mid-career journalists passionate about covering family planning and sexual and reproductive health through the lens of solutions journalism.
What the Reporting Trip Offers:
Training: Participate in an in-depth Solutions Journalism training session that equips you to move beyond problem-based reporting. Learn how to identify evidence-based responses to reproductive health challenges and craft compelling, nuanced stories.
Field Reporting: Travel to selected communities in Kano to engage with health providers, women, young people, and local leaders. Observe firsthand the innovations and interventions improving access to family planning services—especially in underserved or hard-to-reach areas.
Story Development: Receive editorial guidance to shape and pitch stories that meet solutions journalism’s rigorous standards. Explore how community-based programs are tackling longstanding reproductive health gaps.
Networking: Connect with fellow journalists, health workers, policymakers, and programme implementers to build long-term collaborations that strengthen your work.
What’s Expected:
Participants will publish at least one story based on the trip.
Stories should highlight evidence of effectiveness, limitations, and community perspectives.
Published work will contribute to national conversations on family planning and reproductive health and will be amplified through Nigeria Health Watch and Family Planning News Network’s platforms.
Why This Matters:
As Nigeria faces growing reproductive health needs, it’s more important than ever to spotlight solutions—what’s working, how/why it works, and how it can be sustained or scaled. This field trip is your chance to bring those stories to life.
The locations to be visited are in Kano State so journalists working in the region, who understand the cultural nuances are encouraged to apply.
