Technical Lead, Economist AI Lab
The Economist Group (TEG) is seeking a Technical Lead to join its AI Lab in London. The AI Lab is an R&D initiative designed to create innovative, customer-facing AI-powered products and services that amplify journalism and broaden the reach of ideas.
*About the Role*
This one-year paid fellowship position is a unique opportunity to work with a small team shaping how one of the world’s most respected media brands adapts to advances in AI. The successful candidate will lead research efforts, exploring AI’s potential across text, audio, video, and more, and develop innovative prototypes.
*Responsibilities*
– Serve as technical authority on AI capabilities, balancing innovative vision with practical implementation
– Develop fresh thinking and identify new opportunities based on the AI frontier
– Lead research work, from reviewing research to developing and testing new approaches
*Requirements*
– Curious and creative thinker with ability to work autonomously in uncertain environments
– Strong technical knowledge combined with business sense to support company goals
– Understanding of The Economist’s core values: classical liberalism, intellectual rigor, and editorial independence
*Essential Skills and Expertise*
– Expertise in working directly with frontier generative AI models and systems
– Experience in developing AI systems involving different content formats (text, audio, conversation, video)
– Ability to clearly explain complex AI ideas to non-technical audiences
*Desirable Skills and Expertise*
– Direct experience working in a startup, innovation lab, or corporate R&D environment
– Interest or background in using AI in newsrooms, media, or customer-facing contexts
– Familiarity with model fine-tuning, evaluation, and benchmarking
– Experience with orchestration and agentic frameworks
