ALIMA in Nigeria

ALIMA has been operational in Nigeria since 2016, responding to health and nutrition emergencies in Borno, Yobe, Katsina, and Ondo States. Our interventions cover:

  • Pediatric and maternal healthcare
  • Management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM)
  • Epidemic response (cholera, measles, Lassa fever, etc.)
  • Mental health services
  • Training and capacity building of health workers
  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services

In 2023, ALIMA delivered nearly 100,000 outpatient consultations, managed over 15,000 SAM cases, facilitated more than 1,800 safe deliveries, and provided critical inpatient and mental health support.

Main Objective

Provide high-quality nursing care, treatment, and follow-up for patients in accordance with medical prescriptions, organizational protocols, and universal hygiene and safety standards—ensuring quality and continuity of care for the target population.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and uphold universal hygiene standards, infection prevention, and safety protocols at all times.
  • Provide nursing care, administer treatments, and assist doctors during consultations, daily rounds, and procedures.
  • Ensure proper patient reception, comfort, and assistance, particularly for patients with limited autonomy.
  • Maintain medical confidentiality, patient dignity, and ethical conduct in all activities.
  • Monitor and assess patients’ conditions, promptly identifying emergencies or deteriorations.
  • Participate in health education and awareness activities for patients and families.
  • Supervise, guide, and train nursing assistants, cleaners, and related staff, ensuring adherence to protocols.
  • Manage medical supplies, equipment, and stock levels, ensuring accountability and timely requisitions.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, documentation, and handover reports.
  • Conduct patient triage, provide first aid as necessary, and refer urgent cases to the doctor.
  • Identify and refer Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases appropriately, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Ensure proper use of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) kits and compliance with sterilization procedures.
  • Participate in team meetings, report key observations, and support other nurses when needed.
  • Perform other relevant tasks assigned by the supervisor to support overall health service delivery.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Education:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Science (BNS) from a recognized institution.
  • Current and valid practicing license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in clinical or humanitarian health settings (hospital, PHC, or outreach programs).
  • Previous experience with NGOs or mobile clinics is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge:
  • Sound understanding of clinical nursing procedures, infection control, and primary healthcare principles.
  • Familiarity with malnutrition management (CMAM/OptiMA), IMCI, and GBV response protocols preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of medical supply management and reporting tools.

  • Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
