The Chabash Development and Health Initiative (CDHI) is a women-led national NGO registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC/IT/NO 85190) and operational across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria. CDHI’s mission is to empower individuals and communities to live healthy, productive lives through integrated interventions in health, nutrition, protection, WASH, and livelihoods. CDHI partners with international organizations and government agencies to deliver sustainable and community-driven solutions that strengthen local systems and promote equity.

Position Summary

The Gender and Protection Officer will support the implementation of CDHI’s protection and gender equality interventions, including Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response, child protection, and women’s empowerment initiatives. The officer will ensure that protection and gender mainstreaming are effectively integrated across all CDHI programs, strengthen community-based protection mechanisms, and enhance access to lifesaving and recovery support services for vulnerable populations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Program Implementation

  • Lead field-level implementation of gender and protection activities in accordance with project work plans and donor requirements.
  • Facilitate GBV prevention and response interventions, including case management, psychosocial support, and referrals to appropriate services.
  • Support identification and management of child protection cases and follow up to ensure survivor-centered support.
  • Conduct community awareness sessions on gender equality, GBV, child rights, and protection principles.
  • Strengthen community-based protection committees and safe spaces for women, girls, and other at-risk groups.
  • Ensure protection principles (safety, dignity, and non-discrimination) are embedded in all CDHI programs.

2. Gender Mainstreaming

  • Support gender analysis and ensure program activities are designed and implemented in a gender-sensitive manner.
  • Work with program teams to integrate gender equality across health, nutrition, WASH, and livelihood projects.
  • Facilitate staff training and mentorship on gender mainstreaming and protection standards.
  • Promote participation of women and girls in decision-making processes at community and organizational levels.

Case Management and Referrals

  • Identify and manage GBV and protection cases following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain confidential and up-to-date case files in line with data protection and safeguarding policies.
  • Liaise with service providers (legal, medical, psychosocial, and livelihood) to ensure coordinated and timely referrals.
  • Track and report referral outcomes and survivor satisfaction with support received.

Coordination and Networking

  • Coordinate with government structures such as the Ministry of Women Affairs, social welfare departments, and GBV/CP working groups.
  • Represent CDHI in protection and gender coordination forums, clusters, and technical working groups.
  • Build strong relationships with community leaders, youth and women groups, and partner organizations.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Collect and analyze data on protection incidents, gender-based risks, and service utilization.
  • Contribute to preparation of weekly, monthly, and quarterly progress reports.
  • Support assessments, research, and documentation of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Ensure accurate and ethical data management following confidentiality principles

Accountability and Safeguarding

  • Promote community awareness of CDHI’s feedback and complaint mechanisms and ensure protection-related feedback is addressed promptly.
  • Uphold CDHI’s safeguarding and child protection policies and report any suspected violations immediately.
  • Promote gender equity, inclusion, and survivor-centered approaches in all program activities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Law, or a related field (Master’s degree is an advantage).
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in protection and gender programming, preferably with an NGO or humanitarian organization.
  • Strong understanding of GBV prevention and response, child protection, and gender mainstreaming principles.
  • Experience providing case management, psychosocial support, or working with survivors of GBV.
  • Knowledge of national and international protection standards and frameworks (e.g., IASC GBV Guidelines, CP Minimum Standards).
  • Strong community engagement, facilitation, and coordination skills.
  • Excellent reporting and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one local language (Hausa, Kanuri, or Fulfulde preferred).
  • Willingness to travel frequently to field sites and remote areas.
