Main Purpose of the Role

Under the guidance of the Project Medical Referent (PMR), the HPCE Supervisor is responsible for implementing the Health Promotion and Community Engagement strategy, supervising related activities, and managing the HP team at the diphtheria treatment center in Bauchi. The role aligns with MSF’s values, standards, and project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Health Promotion and Community Engagement Strategy

• Contribute to the development and adaptation of the HPCE strategy and work plan

• Lead the implementation and follow-up of the HPCE strategy based on the project timeline

• Promote community and patient involvement through consultations and participatory approaches

• Organize health awareness sessions for MSF staff

• Support the design, testing, and translation of health education materials

• Assist with rapid assessments and surveys

• Help collect, encode, and report community feedback and rumors

• Support implementation of community-based surveillance activities such as active case finding and patient tracing

• Plan and organize community meetings

• Contribute to community mapping

• Ensure data collection tools are available and data is entered accurately

• Participate in monitoring and analyzing HPCE activities and submit monthly reports

Team Management

• Support the evaluation and development of the HP team

• Assist in training needs assessment and training implementation

• Organize regular supervision and on-the-job coaching for the HP team

• Plan and coordinate HP team activities and schedule

• Facilitate regular HP team meetings

Context

Diphtheria is a severe bacterial infection that spreads through respiratory droplets and surfaces. Despite being vaccine-preventable, low immunization coverage has led to outbreaks, especially in Northern Nigeria. Bauchi State recorded 844 suspected diphtheria cases and 73 deaths between Week 1 and Week 34 of 2025, with sharp increases in recent weeks. There is an urgent need for enhanced vaccination, rapid case management, and strong community engagement.

Requirements

Education

• Essential: Secondary school diploma

• Desirable: Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, social work, behavioral sciences, public health, community health, or nursing

Experience

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in health promotion, team management, or program implementation

• Experience in qualitative research methods is highly desirable

Languages

• English and Hausa are essential

Technical Skills

• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required

• Strong reporting and data analysis skills

• Familiarity with participatory approaches
