Job Opportunity: Research Assistant – Data Collectors
Location: Jigawa, Gombe, and Ekiti States, Nigeria

Duration: 2 days of training + 10 days of paid fieldwork
Jhpiego, a global leader in healthcare service delivery and research, is currently conducting a mixed-methods evaluation of the Quality Improvement and Leadership Management (QILM) initiative in Jigawa, Gombe, and Ekiti States. The evaluation aims to assess improvements in the quality of care across multiple health programs, including HIV, TB, malaria, MNCH, and COVID-19. Data will be gathered through structured interviews, clinical observations, and stakeholder engagement using digital tools.
We are seeking qualified and experienced data collectors residing in the above states to serve as field evaluation officers. These individuals will play a critical role in collecting high-quality, ethical, and accurate data from healthcare providers, facility managers, and patients.
Key Responsibilities
Training and Preparation
- Attend one full day of intensive training on study protocols, digital data collection tools (KoboCollect), ethical guidelines, and fieldwork logistics.
- Participate in tool familiarization, mock interviews, and consent simulations.
Data Collection
Depending on your background and skillset, you may be assigned to one or more of the following:
A. Structured Interviews (Tools 1, 2A, 3)
- Conduct digital interviews with:
- Facility managers (Tool 1)
- Healthcare providers on QI knowledge and practices (Tool 2A)
- Patients (Tool 3), including outpatients and pregnant women
- Obtain informed consent and complete all data entries accurately using KoboCollect.
B. Focus Group Discussions / Key Informant Interviews (Tool 4)
- Facilitate or support FGDs and KIIs with local stakeholders.
- Record discussions (with consent), take structured notes, and submit all materials promptly to supervisors.
Ethics and Data Security
- Ensure informed verbal consent from all participants.
- Maintain strict confidentiality, particularly for patient and provider data.
- Handle mobile devices, recordings, and field notes securely and responsibly.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of HND or Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, social sciences, or a related field (required)
- Prior experience in data collection for research or program evaluation (strongly preferred)
- At least two years’ experience with qualitative research methodologies and stakeholder engagement
- Proficiency in using KoboCollect or similar digital data collection tools
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access (ability to learn quickly is essential)
- Resident of Jigawa, Gombe, or Ekiti State with knowledge of the local healthcare system
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Fluency in local languages (e.g., Hausa, Yoruba, Fulfulde) is an added advantage
- Proven ability to transcribe interviews, take accurate notes, and produce timely reports
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time during fieldwork
Expected Deliverables
- Fully completed and accurate digital data submissions (via KoboCollect)
- Daily field logs and activity summaries
- Secure submission of audio recordings and field notes (as applicable)
